Emergency Public Information officers are responsible for ensuring that the affected public receives accurate and timely information during an emergency. Armed with good information, people are better able to make good decisions and, by doing so, contribute to the overall response goal of saving lives and protecting property.
This course is designed to prepare participants to function as full- or part-time PIOs. Additionally, this training is a prerequisite and foundation for more advanced public information officer training.
This training will equip participants with the basic skills needed to function as a PIO such as oral and written communications, and understanding and working with the media, and basic tools and techniques needed to perform effectively.
The primary training audience is individuals who have public information responsibilities during an emergency/disaster event and distribute disaster awareness campaign information.
This course is approved for ND POST Board credit.
NDDES will reimburse North Dakota residents working in Emergency Management or first responder roles for meals and lodging according to state rates and policy. Participants must live or work in ND and travel a distance greater than 50 miles to be eligible for reimbursement. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Quality Inn (701-223-1911) and will be available until September 7, 2020.
