TRAINING AND EXERCISE

MGT 340 Crisis Leadership and Decision Making
Date: 8/27/2019
Location: Bismarck

This 4-hour training event will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel Bismarck, 605 E Broadway Ave., as a pre-conference training for the 2019 Emergency Management Conference.

Seminar participants will discuss the strategic- and executive-level issues and challenges related to preparing for, responding to, and recovering from a catastrophic incident. The venue provides an excellent opportunity to share proven strategies and practices and apply lessons learned from past natural and human-made disasters.

The seminar is a facilitated, free-flowing discussion of the stresses of crisis leadership and decision making gained from an examination of a Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government case study of a catastrophic disaster. The seminar supports the national priorities and capabilities that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) encourages state and local jurisdictions to establish as articulated in Presidential Policy Directive-8 (PPD-8) and subsequent documents and policies, such as the National Preparedness System, the National Preparedness Goal, the National Planning Frameworks, the supporting mission areas, and core capabilities.

This seminar uses one of four case studies to examine the dynamics of crisis leadership and decision-making from an elected or senior official's perspective. The 4-hour seminar uses the case study to frame discussions on ways to overcome challenges in planning, decision making, crisis communications and recovery associated with a large-scale incident. The final outcome of the seminar is the development of an individual and jurisdiction plan of actions needed to improve preparedness and emergency response.

Please include a full mailing address in your registration as the case study will be mailed out for your review prior to the training.
